Harmony in Design
The decade-long collaboration between renowned architects Alex Michaelis of London-based Michaelis Boyd and Nick Plewman of Johannesburg-based Plewman Architects culminated in the creation of Arijiju, a stunning retreat strategically positioned to capture the breathtaking views of sunrise, sunset, and Mount Kenya. Influenced by the acoustics of the surrounding valley, the location maximizes the enchanting sounds of the dawn chorus of birds. Inspired by Ethiopian rock-hewn churches and Le Thoronet Abbey in southern France, the architecture showcases vaulted archways, stone passageways, and a central courtyard, setting it apart in the area.
Pack lightweight, neutral-colored clothing for safaris. Bring binoculars and a good camera to capture the incredible wildlife. Comfortable closed-toe shoes are recommended for walking safaris.
Consult your doctor for necessary vaccinations and anti-malarial medication. Carry a basic first aid kit and any prescription medications you may need.
Learn a few basic Swahili phrases to show respect to the local culture. Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or rural areas.
Kenya has diverse climates, so check the weather of the specific regions you plan to visit. Layers are useful to adapt to temperature variations, especially in higher elevations.
The official currency is the Kenyan Shilling. Have some cash for small purchases, but credit cards are widely accepted in urban areas.
Purchase comprehensive travel insurance covering health, trip cancellations, and any potential safari-related incidents.
Respect wildlife and follow your guide's instructions during safaris. Contribute to local economies by purchasing crafts directly from artisans.
Book flights in advance, especially during peak travel times. Utilize reputable transportation services for safety and reliability.
Try local dishes such as Nyama Choma (grilled meat) and Ugali (maize porridge). Drink bottled or treated water to avoid waterborne illnesses.
Purchase a local SIM card for your phone to have affordable local communication and internet access. Download offline maps and travel apps for navigation in areas with limited connectivity.
Every bedroom at Arijiju is beautifully appointed and subtly different. That said, they all have in common a king size bed and impressive leather desks, deep copper baths and indoor and outdoor showers, huge lush towels and great pieces of furniture. Sandalwood candles, crystal wall lights, copper details and an edited palette of soft toned furnishings complete the sense of understated luxury. Hot water bottles and ragging fires keep guests snug on cooler evenings.
Six to twelve months in advance, if possible. A minimum of 4 months required. We suggest getting started as soon as you have a destination or event in mind — we can help sort out the details. Event tickets, the best hotels, and reservations at popular restaurants always sell out or book up quickly when a high-profile event is in town.
